Unranked San Clemente Tops No. 2 Mater Dei

Ben Straley and Adam Little had run-scoring doubles in the seventh inning to help San Clemente upset second-ranked Mater Dei, 7-4, in a South Coast League baseball game Friday at Mater Dei.

Billy Pinney hit a three-run homer in San Clemente’s five-run fifth. Mater Dei (11-4, 6-1 in league) countered with a grand slam by Josh Hansen in the bottom of the fifth to bring the Monarchs within one, 5-4.

Straley went two for four with two runs scored and Nolan Moser, who entered the game in the fifth, pitched 2 1/3 innings for San Clemente (10-6, 4-3).

In another South Coast League game:

Capistrano Valley 8, Mission Viejo 2--Tommy Pincott hit a home run and a double to lead visiting Capistrano Valley (6-9, 2-5). Scott Cheo hit his seventh home run of the season for the Cougars.

In the Century League:

Canyon 6, Orange 2--Jon Holato hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Chad Heistermann went two for three and scored two runs for visiting Canyon (12-4, 6-1).

Villa Park 13, Santa Ana Valley 1 (5, mercy)--Jeff Tuttle went two for three with two RBIs and three runs scored for visiting Villa Park (8-8, 5-2). Starter Brandon Averill struck out six in four innings and went two for three with two RBIs for the Spartans, who scored 10 runs in the fourth inning.

In the Empire League:

No. 1 El Dorado 6, Century 3 (9)--Justin Carlin drove in the winning run with a single and J.P. Frid and Ryan Valdez followed with base hits to drive in two more runs in the top of the ninth for visiting El Dorado (14-4, 7-0).

Mitch Nord hit a two-run homer in the third and Dan Franklin hit a home run in the fourth to give the Golden Hawks a 3-0 lead, but Century (8-9, 0-7) scored three in the fifth.

In the Garden Grove League:

No. 4 La Quinta 16, Rancho Alamitos 0--Host La Quinta (17-1, 5-0), scored nine runs in the first inning. Willie Keller was four for four with three RBIs, Anthony Garcia went three for three with two RBIs, and Benny Soto was two for two with three RBIs for the Aztecs.

Santiago 6, Bolsa Grande 1--Junior Felipe Cervantes went two for four with two doubles and four RBIs for Bolsa Grande (7-9, 2-4).

In the Golden West League:

No. 2 Servite 17, Saddleback 4 (6, mercy)--Pat Breen (three for five, six RBIs) had an inside the park grand slam in the fourth inning for visiting Servite (14-2, 7-0). Ben Francisco went three for four with two doubles and an RBI for Servite. Saddleback is 3-14, 1-6.

Westminster 9, Santa Ana 5--Sophomore Larry Kiklas went three for three with two RBIs and a stolen base for Westminster (10-6-1, 4-3).

In the Sea View League:

Corona del Mar 15, Newport Harbor 14 (10 innings)--With two outs in the top of the 10th, senior first baseman Mark Hatfield singled to score senior Eric Weithorn for Corona del Mar (9-5, 5-2). Hatfield went three for five. Seniors Matt Larsen and Nate Lerma and juniors David Besser and John Dicesar each had three RBIs for the visiting Sea Kings.

El Toro 7, Santa Margarita 3--Josue Lopez hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning for host El Toro (10-8, 3-4). Bob Pearce (4-3) pitched a complete game and Mike Marquez went three for three with three runs scored and an RBI for El Toro.

In the Sunset League:

No. 9 Edison 7, Marina 4--Senior Tony Cappuccilli (two for four, three RBIs) hit his county-leading 10th home run of the season, in the fourth to set the school’s single-season record. Cappuccilli hit nine home runs as a sophomore and nine as a junior and has 28 overall, which is one away from the county career record set by La Quinta’s Gerald Laird last season.

Los Alamitos 15, No. 5 Esperanza 10--Chad Lindholm’s three-run home run in the fifth inning provided the margin of victory for host Los Alamitos (10-8, 4-3).

In a nonleague game:

Norwalk Glenn 6, No. 7 Los Amigos 0--John Lopez went two for three with a single and a double and Anthony Comacho went three for four, including two doubles for visiting Glenn (9-4). Los Amigos (14-3) had three hits to Glenn’s 11.
