Chris Nordquist, a 1983 graduate of Rio Mesa High, has been hired to coach the boys’ varsity team at his alma mater, replacing Steve Wolf, who quit after his 13th season and a 3-20 record.

“My goal is to be competitive in [the Pacific View League],” said Nordquist, the son of Al Nordquist, former Moorpark College coach.

“And I hope in a couple of years that we can be one of the better teams in the area.”

Nordquist was an assistant boys’ coach under Gary Abraham at Channel Islands High from 1995-98, but he didn’t coach last season when Abraham took a year off.

Nordquist came to Channel Islands after being fired as an assistant at New Mexico State for his role in recruiting violations that netted the Aggies three years’ probation.

* Senior Jake DeGennaro of Westlake High has committed to play at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., Coach Gary Grayson of Westlake said.

DeGennaro averaged 17.2 points last season and set a Westlake single-season record by making 91.9% of his free throws.
