Lutheran Suffers Rare Loss

Tim Metzger scored his 18th goal of the season and 71st of his career as Calvary Chapel handed Orange Lutheran its first Olympic League boys’ soccer loss in four years, 2-0, Tuesday.

Calvary Chapel midfielder Mike Culp scored a goal and relieved goaltender Jon Linzey (four saves), who injured his back in the 30th minute. Culp made seven saves for the Eagles (9-9-1, 6-3). Orange Lutheran is 6-4-1, 7-1-1.

In Freeway League boys’ soccer:

Buena Park 4, Sunny Hills 0--Neither team scored in the first half, but Buena Park’s Elder Najera started the Coyotes’ second-half run with two goals early. Buena Park is 12-7-1, 6-0.

Sonora 3, Troy 3 (OT)--John Mark Geiss tied the score in the 70th minute for Troy (11-6-2, 3-2-2). The Warriors had taken a 2-1 lead with two goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but Sonora (6-5-4, 2-1-4) moved ahead on goals by Nazario Miramontes and Mike Rocha.

In Century League girls’ water polo:

No. 2 Villa Park 21, Orange 3--Shannon Buckner scored five goals and Kristyn Pulver and Shari Meyer each had four for Villa Park (21-1, 4-0).

In the South Coast League:

No. 4 Capistrano Valley 19, Trabuco Hills 5--Ashley Stachowski scored nine goals and Xina Gleason made seven saves in three quarters to lead Capistrano Valley (13-6, 4-0). Amber Stachowski had three goals, five steals and five assists for the Cougars.

In nonleague play:

Kennedy 15, Troy 14 (OT)--Marissa Hermeyer scored two goals in the fourth quarter and two more in overtime, including the game-winner, to help visiting Kennedy to a sudden-death victory.

Hermeyer finished with five goals and Karen Steen had a game-high seven goals for Kennedy (6-12).

Mater Dei 6, Huntington Beach 5 (OT)--After trailing, 5-1, in the fourth quarter, Mater Dei (8-9) scored five goals, including Katie Ronan’s in the second half of overtime. Julia Kelly made seven saves for Mater Dei. Huntington Beach is 7-15.

In Olympic League boys’ basketball:

Ontario Christian 61, Brethren Christian 58--Ryan Fuqua’s three-pointer with two minutes remaining sealed the victory for visiting Ontario Christian (11-9, 3-5). Chris Austad scored 19 points and Joe Gaynor had 17 for Brethren Christian (5-18, 1-8).

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Tarbut V’ Torah 53, Glendale Adventist 38--Noam Dashti and Tanner Bral each scored 18 points and Ben Ringerman had six points and 15 rebounds for Tarbut V’ Torah.

In Sea View League wrestling:

Santa Margarita 60, Corona del Mar 20--Matt Williams earned a pin in 1 minute 38 seconds at 112 pounds for Santa Margarita (10-8, 3-2), which scored 36 points on forfeits.
