Jacobsen Keeps the Record in House

The historian charged with updating the Southern Section record book is not required to expend much effort when it comes to boys’ basketball career scoring records.

All the person must do, it seems, is replace one Glendora High player with another.

Casey Jacobsen put his name at the top of the list Tuesday night by scoring 33 points in a 70-64 Baseline League victory over Upland before a capacity crowd at Upland High.

Jacobsen, a 6-foot-6 senior guard, has 3,067 points, passing the 3,053 points scored by former Tartan Tracy Murray, who played at Glendora from 1987-89 and is playing for the Washington Wizards. Cameron Murray, Tracy’s brother, is third on the list with 2,842 points, scored at Glendora from 1991-94. He is a guard for Louisville.

“I felt a lot of pressure, but it was positive pressure,” said Jacobsen, who entered the game needing 20 points to break the record. “A lot of people came out tonight to support me and the team and that gave me incentive to go out and do the best I could.”

Jacobsen, who will play at Stanford next season, scored five points in the first quarter, six in the second, and 11 in both the third and fourth quarters. He made 10 of 20 shots, including six of nine from three-point range, and made all seven of his free throws.

Upland (21-3) trailed 29-26 at halftime, but it was obvious the record was going to fall when Jacobsen came out after the break and made consecutive three-pointers from the fight wing. He tied the record in the third quarter with two free throws that put the Tartans ahead, 45-32.

On Glendora’s next possession, Jacobsen took a pass from senior forward Chris Clark, squared his shoulders to the basket and made a three-pointer with 1:19 left in the quarter.

“When I saw [Clark] coming at me, my eyes lit up,” Jacobsen said. “When I got the ball, all I was thinking was, ‘This one is going down.’ ”

Play was stopped after the basket, Jacobsen was presented the game ball and he climbed into the stands and exchanged hugs and kisses with his parents.

The victory clinched the league title for defending Division I-A champion Glendora (25-1).
