Marmonte Race Heats Up

Sergio Renes scored his 16th and 17th goals to lead the Simi Valley High boys’ soccer team Wednesday to a 5-0 rout of visiting Newbury Park, tightening the Marmonte League race.

Westlake and Simi Valley, which also got two goals from Whitney Fike, are tied for second place, two points behind Newbury Park. Teams are awarded three points for a victory and one for a tie.

Newbury Park (11-5-6, 6-1-4 in league play) can clinch its first league title with a victory at home Friday over Moorpark.

Westlake (11-9-2, 6-3-2) concludes regular-season play today by hosting Royal, and Simi Valley (11-5-6, 5-1-5) plays its finale Friday at Agoura.

Reseda 4, Van Nuys 2--Oscar Sims scored his 17th and 18th goals and the Regents (19-3-2, 10-1-2) clinched at least a tie for their fourth Valley Pac-8 Conference championship in the last five years by beating the visiting Wolves (2-7-2, 2-7-2).

GIRLS’ GAMES

Hart 7, Saugus 2--Becca Gould and Katie McKeon each scored two goals and the Indians (16-5-3, 7-2-1) clinched their sixth consecutive Foothill League title with a victory over the host Centurions (8-5-4, 6-3-1).

Saugus, Valencia and Canyon are tied for second place. A meeting today of the schools’ athletic directors will determine a tiebreaking procedure.

Birmingham 8, Sherman Oaks CES 0--The Patriots (11-3-4, 9-0-3) clinched their third consecutive West Valley League title with their 11th shutout at Birmingham.
