Top-Seeded Teams in Playoffs Are Familiar

Five boys’ teams and four girls’ teams that won Southern Section basketball titles last year were selected Sunday as the top-seeded team in their divisions for playoffs that begin this week.

Lakewood Artesia, Glendora, Compton Dominguez, West Hills Chaminade and Verbum Dei are atop their divisions in the 10-division boys’ tournament that begins Wednesday with wild-card games and first-round games in Division II-A.

Palos Verdes Peninsula, Brea Olinda, North Hollywood Harvard Westlake and Palos Verdes Chadwick are among the top-seeded teams in the 10-division girls’ tournament that begins Thursday with wild-card games and first-round games in five divisions.

Championship games will be played March 5 and 6. Boys’ championship games will be played at the Bren Events Center and the Arrowhead Pond. Girls’ championship games will be played at the Long Beach Pyramid.

The top two teams in each division advance to the state regional playoffs March 9-13. Winners of the regionals advance to the state championships March 19 and 20 at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento.
