Ventura Seeded No. 1 in Regional

Top-seeded Ventura College tops five women’s basketball teams from the region that will participate in the Southern California regional starting this week.

Ventura (28-3), champion of the Western State Conference North Division, has a first-round bye and will open play March 2 at home against the winner of Friday’s 7 p.m. game between Moorpark (18-13) and host Fullerton (18-12).

Eighth-seeded Canyons (20-9) also has a first-round bye and will play March 2 against the winner of Friday’s game between Santa Ana (20-9) and Mt. San Antonio (13-24).

In another women’s opener Friday, No. 13 Valley (20-13) hosts Chaffey (22-11) at 7 p.m.

Glendale tops four men’s teams from the region that will play first-round games this week.

Sixth-seeded Glendale (22-9), which finished second to top-seeded Santa Monica in the WSC South Division, hosts Fullerton (14-17) at 7 p.m. Saturday.

In 7 p.m men’s games Friday, No. 15 Valley (19-13) hosts Trade Tech (17-11) and No. 19 Canyons plays at Cuesta (21-12).

Antelope Valley hosts a doubleheader Friday, with the No. 14-seeded women’s team (20-11) playing Southwestern (16-10) at 5:30 p.m. and the No. 13-seeded Marauder men’s team (17-14) meeting Chaffey (18-13) at 7:30.

Former Montclair Prep co-coaches Howard Abrams and Greg Patterson could be returning next season to direct the Mounties’ boys’ basketball team after a one-year absence.

Principal Vernon Simpson held a meeting last week with Abrams, who resigned after coaching the Mounties to three Southern Section championships in 22 seasons.

Montclair Prep finished 7-18 this season under Coach Bob Webb, who coached the girls’ team last season.

SOFTBALL

Cal State Northridge (5-2) won all five of its games last weekend to capture the San Diego State tournament championship, outscoring opponents, 36-10.

Freshman Ui Bal went nine for 14 and scored 10 runs. Veronica Lopez tied school single-game records with two home runs and six runs batted in.

Tara Glaister and Summer Richardson combined on a no-hitter against Texas Tech on Saturday, Nortridge’s first no-hitter since 1996.

El Camino Real High will hold its alumni game at 10 a.m. Feb. 27 at El Camino Real. The Conquistadores have won 11 City Section championships.
