Dave Bohannon Wins Twice in Quarterfinals

Dave Bohannon of Laguna Beach defeated John Collins of Austin, Tex., 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to advance to the 50 singles semifinals of the USTA National Men’s 50 and 55 Hardcourt Championships Friday at Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Bohannon also teamed with his brother Dan, from Orange, to advance to the men’s 50 doubles semifinals. Collins and Robert Muir of Newport Beach also advanced to the 50 doubles semifinals.

Ken Stuart and Robin Ray of Newport Beach advanced to the 55 doubles semifinals.

DIVING

Kellie Brennan (Edison High) finished second in the women’s one-meter diving event at the Zone D championships in Tempe, Ariz. Rachelle Smith of the Salt Lake Aquatic Program won with 487.65 points. Brennan finished with 473.45.

Crown Valley Diver Kristen Marquis (Santa Margarita) was fourth.

Louie Gagnet (Mission Viejo Nadadores, University) finished fourth in the men’s three-meter event. Nadadores divers Ray Vincent (El Toro) and Robbie Quinn (Laguna Hills) finished 15th and 16th.

SOCCER

Eight county players will compete for the Mission Viejo Elite Mirage in next week’s U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The Mirage is competing in the under-18 girls’ division. The team’s county players are midfielders Kendra Aston (Huntington Beach), Allyson Marquand (University) and Lauren Orlandos (El Toro), defenders Lauren Cozzolino (Santa Margarita), Ann Desmond (Mission Viejo), Jennifer Orr (Newport Harbor) and Mandy Melendez (Trabuco Hills) and forward Lee Ann Morton (Edison).

Round-robin play begins Tuesday. Championship games will be played Sunday, July 25.

BASEBALL

Adam Spiker, a sophomore outfielder at Cypress College last spring, has signed to play at West Virginia.

A graduate of Marina High, Spiker batted .395 with 45 runs batted in and scored 46 runs for Cypress.

* Mark Flatten has been named the baseball coach at Pacifica High, replacing Jeff Davidson who resigned. Flatten, a Pacifica graduate, also coached at Missouri.
