Share

The Northport/Cow Harbor Piranha from New York defeated the Mission Viejo Mirage on penalty kicks Sunday in the finals of the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Megan Mills slipped her penalty shot past Mirage goalkeeper Darci Carruthers in the 12th round to give the Piranha the national title in the girls’ under-18 division.

The game was scoreless through regulation and overtime. In the 11th round, Carruthers’ penalty shot was saved by Piranha goalkeeper Allison Brennan, who then had a chance to win the game, but shot high and wide. Brennan saved Dante Lipfert’s shot, which set up Mills’ game-winner.
