Ferlianto, Timourian Reach Final

Top-seeded Hagop Timourian of Glendale defeated Anthony Pham of Beverly Hills, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and second-seeded Jesse Ferlianto of Canyon Country beat Josh Horwitz of Upland, 6-1, 6-3, on Thursday to advance to the championship match today in the boys’ 18 division of the Jack Kramer Summer Junior Open at the Burbank Tennis Center.

Samuel Tadevosian of Glendale defeated Jarryd Cooper, 6-3, 6-1, and will play Sky Laws of Los Angeles in the boys’ 14 final.

Modesta Salmeron of Granada Hills beat Whitney MacDonald, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, in a girls’ 18 semifinal, and Lori Stern of Ojai upset top-seeded Isabella Tsironis, 6-1, 6-2, in a girls’ 16 semifinal.

* Lester Cook of Calabasas defeated Trent Aaron of Westchester, 6-1, 6-3, Thursday to advance in a men’s qualifier for a U.S. Tennis Assn. professional satellite event at Flint Canyon Tennis Club in La Canada.

Also advancing were Andrew Rosenfeld of Beverly Hills, a senior at Harvard-Westlake High, Juan Duke of Palmdale and Jeremy Munson of La Crescenta.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Shelia Burrell of Reseda placed second in the heptathlon and Dominique Arnold of Northridge advanced to the final of the men’s 110-meter high hurdles in the Pan American Games at Winnipeg, Canada, on Wednesday.

Burrell, an assistant track coach at Cal State Northridge, totaled 6,244 points to finish behind Magalys Garcia of Cuba, who set a meet record of 6,290.

Arnold, a volunteer assistant at Northridge, ran a career-best 13.21 to qualify for the final today.

BASKETBALL

* Virgil Watson, former men’s coach at Ventura College, has been hired as coach at Palomar in San Marcos.

Watson guided Ventura to a 60-9 record in two seasons and the state title in 1996. He was fired in March 1997 because of recruiting violations.
