SEASON AT A GLANCE: The second baseman ranks among region leaders with 47 runs batted in and is batting above .500 with runners in scoring position. He led Poly to the East Valley League championship with his clutch hitting. “He’s simply the best hitter I’ve seen as far as being able to hit the ball where’s it’s pitched,” Coach Chuck Schwal said.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Guerrero delivered perhaps the most dramatic home run in school history, hitting a two-out, two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Poly a 4-3 victory over El Camino Real in a City Championship quarterfinal.
GIRLS
Deneeka Torrey
SCHOOL: Taft
YEAR: Junior
SPORT: Track and field
SEASON AT A GLANCE: Torrey has run 12.22 in the 100 meters, a school-record 14.58 in the 100 high hurdles and 43.74 in the 300 lows. Her time in the 100 hurdles ranks fifth on the all-time region list and her time in the 300 lows ranks 11th.
WEEK AT A GLANCE: Torrey won the 100 hurdles in 14.82 and the 300 lows in 43.98, placed second in the 100 in 12.34 and ran the first leg on the victorious 1,600 relay team that clocked 3:48.64 to help Taft win its second consecutive City Section title. The 1,600 relay time ranks fifth on the all-time region list.
