Despite a fine showing by the City of Irvine, parochial schools continued their domination of the Times All-Sports award this season.

The winner of the small-school division for the third consecutive season was Servite/Rosary, which earned 216 points, the most of any county team.

“This is a tribute to our coaches and kids,” Servite Athletic Director Larry Walker said. “With the competition we face nowadays, this is a hefty feat.”

In winning the large-school title for the first time since 1994-95, Mater Dei (164 points) rode Southern Section titles in football and boys’ basketball to a slim margin of victory over University (156). Nonetheless, girls’ Athletic Director Geri Campeau credited some of the school’s minor sports with getting the Monarchs over the hump. Mater Dei finished fourth last season.

“Our girls’ tennis team doing well in CIF this spring was a huge contribution,” she said. “And our girls’ golf team did well, also. The results from our minor sports teams this year played a big factor.”

Santa Margarita, which had won three previous large-school titles, was placed in the small-school division this season based on enrollment figures supplied by the school. However, its 186 points would have been good enough to win the large-school crown this season.

Brea Olinda, which finished second a year ago in the small-school division, finished tied for third this year with 152 points. Calvary Chapel, third a year ago, also had 152 points.

University did not win a section team title this spring, but it got solid performances throughout, leading a parade of fine finishes by Irvine teams in the large division. Woodbridge (152), which also failed to win a spring section team title, was third and Irvine (128), which picked up valuable points from a section title in girls’ swimming, was fourth.

The All-Sports award is designed to identify and reward schools that have the county’s most successful and balanced athletic programs. The Times’ scoring format awards points only for a team’s playoff participation and finish. Thus, field hockey programs, for instance, can’t earn points because they do not have section-sanctioned status.

Orange County’s high schools were split into two divisions. The cutoff point was 1,500 students, excluding freshmen. Enrollment figures are from the Southern Section office as of Sept. 23.
