Toronto’s Gonzalez Out for Season

Shortstop Alex Gonzalez of the Toronto Blue Jays will be sidelined for the remainder of the season because of torn cartilage in his right shoulder.

Dr. James Andrews performed season-ending surgery Thursday, the day after Gonzalez visited Andrews to have his sore shoulder reexamined.

On the disabled list since May 24, Gonzalez was batting .292 with 13 doubles, two home runs and 12 runs batted in in 38 games this season.

The former wife of New York Yankee pitcher Orlando “El Duque” Hernandez is suing him for an increase in child-support payments. Norma Manso wants a minimum of $9,500 a month--up from the current $2,000--and has filed a lawsuit in Miami asking the payments be retroactive to October, when she arrived from Cuba. . . . The Cleveland Indians recalled left-hander Mark Langston from triple-A Buffalo, where he was on a 30-day rehabilitation assignment. . . . The St. Louis Cardinals optioned rookie outfielder J.D. Drew to triple-A Memphis to allow him to continue to work on his hitting stroke. The team also announced that Shawon Dunston had dropped his appeal of a three-day suspension for charging the mound at Dodger Stadium on May 23 and that it had put left-hander Lance Painter on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained shoulder.
