Northridge Plays Long Ball to Extend Winning Streak

Home runs by Kevin Patrick, Jason Watkins and Daryl Grant gave Cal State Northridge a commanding lead after four innings and helped the Matadors extend their winning streak to five games with an 11-7 nonconference victory over visiting Temple on Friday.

Patrick got Northridge (16-13) rolling with a two-run homer in a three-run first inning. Watkins’ three-run homer highlighted a four-run third, and Grant led off the fourth with a home run to give the Matadors an 8-2 lead.

Temple (1-9) chipped away at the deficit, pulling within 9-7 with a run in the eighth, but Northridge scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Mike Bumstead scored from second on an error and Eric Horvat delivered a sacrifice fly.

Trevor Gray (3-0) pitched five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, one earned.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

El Segundo 8, Crespi 2--Tim Leveque struck out six and allowed three earned runs in five innings for the visiting Celts (3-1) in a semifinal loss in the El Segundo tournament at Recreation Park in El Segundo.

Crespi, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, committed four errors and didn’t score until the seventh. Crespi’s Clint Kofmehl had a run-scoring single.

Westlake 7, Kennedy 5--Kevin Howard had two hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning, and Michael Nickeas hit a three-run homer in the second for host Westlake (3-0-1) in a rain make-up of the San Fernando Valley tournament.

HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

Antelope Valley 3, Victor Valley 1--Kelly Bleyl (2-0) threw a no-hitter and had a two-run triple in the first inning of a nonleague game at Antelope Valley.

Bleyl struck out eight and walked none, but Antelope Valley (2-0) committed six errors.

El Camino Real 2, Calabasas 0--Cara Blumfield’s two-run home run spoiled a 10-strikeout performance by Calabasas’ Amy Rosson in a nonleague game at El Camino Real.

Pitchers Stephanie Frasco and Ashley Redlin of El Camino Real (4-1) combined to limit Calabasas (2-2-1) to two hits.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Westlake 13, Agoura 5--Alex Yaftali, Narbe Vohrabi and Erik Janson each won three sets to give Westlake (2-0, 1-0) a sweep in singles play against Agoura (2-2, 0-1) in a round-robin Marmonte League match at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

Crespi 12, Chaminade 6--The No. 1 doubles team of Carlos Gil and Ray Purwadihardja swept three sets and improved to 12-0 for Crespi (2-3, 1-1) in a Mission League victory over Chaminade (1-5, 0-1) at Braemar Country Club.

Littlerock 14, Silverado 4--No. 1 singles player Andres Martinez defeated Joe Barragio, Chris Armington and Jethro Del Castillo to lead the Lobos (3-1) in a nonleague victory at Silverado.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Harvard-Westlake d. Alemany, 15-11, 13-15, 16-14, 15-6--The Wolverines rebounded from a lackluster loss to Royal with a Mission League victory at home.

Bill Strickland had 22 kills and Will Curtis added 20 for the Wolverines (3-1, 2-0).

“I like what we did at the net tonight,” Harvard-Westlake Coach Jess Quiroz said.

Joe Chavez had 20 kills for Alemany (2-1, 1-1), which won a game against the Wolverines for the first time since 1995.

Crespi d. Chaminade, 15-10, 15-9, 3-15, 15-3--Marcin Jagoda had 14 kills for host Crespi (2-2, 1-1) in a Mission League match.

Canoga Park d. Cleveland, 7-15, 15-7, 6-15, 15-8, 15-5--Phillip Mramor had five of his 31 kills in the decisive fifth game for Canoga Park (3-0) in a nonconference match at Cleveland.
