Swimming Titles On Line at Long Beach

Hundreds of competitors from throughout the Southland will compete for boys’ and girls’ team and individual titles in the Southern Section swimming championships Friday and Saturday at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Mission Viejo is the defending Division I boys’ champion. Crescenta Valley and Paso Robles won the Division II and III titles, respectively, in 1998.

Irvine (Division I), Laguna Hills (II) and South Pasadena (III) are the defending girls’ champions.

The Division I finals are Friday at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, Division III finals are at 11 a.m., Division II at 5:30 p.m.

Boys’ and girls’ track and field prelims in four divisions will be contested Friday and Saturday at four sites.

Division III finals are Friday at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.

On Saturday: Division I is at Veterans Stadium; Division II at Mt. San Antonio College; Division IV at Citrus College.

Nine competitors in each event qualify for the Southern Section championships June 23 at Cerritos College. The Masters Meet is May 28 at Cerritos College, the state meet June 4-5 at Sacramento.

Two-time defending state champion Long Beach Poly is the defending boys’ Southern Section Division I titlist. Mission Viejo (Division II), Gardena Serra (III) and Verbum Dei (IV) are also defending section champions.

Defending state co-champion Long Beach Wilson won the girls’ Division I title in 1998. Other defending champions: Riverside J.W. North (Division II); Playa del Rey St. Bernard (III) and Marymount (IV).

Boys’ team golf finals will be played today at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc. Palm Desert is the defending champion.

Individual championships for boys and girls are May 20 at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs.

The state championships will be played June 8 at the SCGA Members’ Club in Murrieta.
