Artists’ Burdick Knocks Off La Habra

Brandon Burdick scored with three seconds left in sudden-death overtime to give Laguna Beach a 9-8 victory over La Habra in the first round of the Southern Section Division II boys’ water polo playoffs Friday at Laguna Beach.

La Habra took a two-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but Kirk Ziegler scored twice for the Artists in the last 2 1/2 minutes to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

Laguna Beach’s Pat Sandys scored first in overtime, followed by La Habra’s Josh Jewett 30 seconds later to tie the score and send it to sudden death.

Ziegler and Tyler Waidley each scored three goals for Laguna Beach (16-7). Laguna Beach will play Saddleback on Wednesday in the second round.

In other Division II games:

Saddleback 11, Katella 8--Daniel Noon and Ulysses Bernal each scored two fourth-quarter goals to seal the victory. Bernal finished with five goals and Noon had four. Art Colchado had three saves for Saddleback (24-3). Dan Flueb had three goals for Katella (14-14).

Corona del Mar 13, Edison 6--Garrett Gentry scored four goals to lead Pacific Coast League champion Corona del Mar (16-10). The Sea Kings, seeded No. 2, took a 5-4 halftime lead and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring Edison 4-0. Shaun Carman scored two goals and had three steals for visiting Edison (15-12).

El Dorado 8, Santa Margarita 7--El Dorado held off a fourth-quarter rally by Santa Margarita. Nick Nolan scored the winner with 1:29 remaining. Matt Van Eck, Ryan Patterson and Mike Lee each scored twice to lead El Dorado (16-10), which plays second-seeded Corona del Mar.

Esperanza 10, University 8--Kelly Greiner had 11 saves for host Esperanza. Charles Odion scored three goals, including two in the fourth quarter, for the Aztecs. Teddy Peck scored three goals for University. Esperanza will play Servite.

Los Alamitos 7, Cypress 2--Erik Geoffroy scored two goals and John Enete had seven steals and three assists to lead the host Griffins (19-6). B.J. Ploessel made six saves for Los Alamitos, which outshot Cypress, 29-9. Andy Orr made 17 saves for Cypress. The Griffins, seeded No. 3, will play Buena Park.

Servite 14, Sonora 7--Michael Kim and Vincent Bevins each scored three goals for top-seeded Servite (22-5). Bevins also had four steals and two assists, and Mike Rustemeyer had two goals, six steals and two assists for the Friars. Kimo Foley led Sonora (18-7) with three goals.

In the Division VI playoffs:

Chino Hills Ayala 17, Western 7--Ayala led, 13-6, at the end of the third quarter. Michael Wong scored three goals for Western (19-9).

In Southern Section Division IV girls’ tennis:

La Canada 10, Ocean View 8--La Canada’s No. 2 player, Jenny Gilmour, defeated Ocean View’s No. 3 player, Aileen Pham, 6-3, for a key victory at Ocean View.
