Brethren Puts Up Points at Will to Knock Off Maranatha, 55-25
Steve Joo rushed for 187 yards in 12 carries and scored twice to help Brethren Christian beat Sierra Madre Maranatha, 55-25, Saturday in a nonleague prep football game at Clark Stadium in Lakewood.
Joo scored on runs of 43 and 50 yards for Brethren Christian (2-2), which had 213 rushing yards by halftime. The Warriors ran up a 42-6 lead through three quarters and finished the game with 598 yards of total offense.
Brethren Christian scored on the sixth play of the game, a 41-yard run by Josh Harmon. Joo’s first touchdown came with 21 seconds left in the opening quarter.
The Warriors then scored twice in a span of two and a half minutes midway through the second quarter.
Chris Le caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Painter to increase the score to 21-0 with 6:37 to play.
Maranatha then got on the board, needing only three plays to move 56 yards, scoring on Matt Mills’ 19-yard pass to John Gregorich.
But on the second play after the ensuing kickoff, Joo broke through two tackles to score on a 50-yard run 4:10 before halftime.
The Warriors scored on all four of their possessions in the second half. Painter threw a 36-yard pass to Dave Workman to increase the score to 35-6.
After Leon Green intercepted a pass and returned it 32 yards, he scored on a 13-yard run late in the third quarter. Green would later add a 21-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.
Painter was 9 of 18 for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Harmon rushed for 144 yards in eight carries.
The Minutemen were led by Mills, who was 18 of 40 for 371 yards and four touchdowns.
