Arguello Is Everywhere for Villa Park

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

El Modena saw far more of Villa Park’s Bryan Arguello than it would have liked in the Spartans’ 39-3 Century League victory Friday at El Modena High.

There he was, less than two minutes into the second quarter, taking a reverse 31 yards for a touchdown to give the Spartans a 9-3 lead.

There he was on the very next play from scrimmage, intercepting a pass from El Modena’s Kevin Brown at the Vanguard 47-yard line.

There he was with 39 seconds to go in the first half, taking a lateral from Villa Park’s John Henry Jackson and throwing to Ryan Wagner in the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown, which gave the Spartans a 19-3 edge and seemed to take the fight out of El Modena.

“He’s played like that all year for us,” Villa Park Coach Pat Mahoney said. “He’s a good athlete. This is a guy who was a starter in three varsity sports [football, basketball, baseball] last year as a sophomore.”

Villa Park (5-2, 2-0 in league) got solid supporting play from Jackson, who completed nine of 15 passes for 97 yards, and Marquis Colvin, who rushed 19 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns.

El Modena (1-5, 1-1), which got its only points on a 29-yard field goal by Marcos Chavez on the first play of the second quarter, turned the ball over deep in Villa Park territory twice in the fourth quarter.

Daniel Reyes, who led El Modena with 58 yards in 17 carries, couldn’t handle a pitch and fumbled at Villa Park’s two on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Then the Vanguards took over on their 20-yard line with 2:22 remaining in the game and drove to the Villa Park four before Arguello picked off Brown’s pass in the end zone.
