Los Alamitos Pulls Off Upset in Water Polo

Los Alamitos upset North Hollywood Harvard Westlake, 7-5, to win the championship of the Long Beach Millikan boys’ water polo tournament Saturday at Long Beach Millikan High.

Harvard Westlake is second in the Southern Section Division I rankings. Los Alamitos, ranked ninth in Orange County, plays in Division II, but the section didn’t release a Division II poll last week.

Harvard Westlake’s Brian Ault scored in the opening seconds of the third quarter to give the Wolverines a 4-3 lead. But Los Alamitos’ Joe Gentner tied the score less than a minute later. The Griffins, led by Danny Coltrup, then tightened on defense and held Harvard Westlake scoreless for 9 minutes 32 seconds.

Los Alamitos goalkeeper T.J. Ploessel made nine of his 15 saves in the second half. Trevor Wawrzynski and John Enete had two goals for Los Alamitos (4-0).

In a consolation game:

Irvine 15, Agoura 4--Chris Peck had five goals and Mike Shapiro had four to lead Irvine to a ninth-place finish. Peter Schafer and Billy Swanson each had three goals for the Vaqueros (4-1).

In the Dave Mohs Memorial volleyball tournament:

Division I final set--Newport Harbor defeated Santa Margarita, 15-10, 15-1, and Calvary Chapel defeated Simi Valley Royal, 15-7, 15-12, to advance to the tournament’s Division I championship at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Edison High School.

In the quarterfinals, Newport Harbor defeated Torrance Bishop Montgomery, 15-2, 15-9, and Calvary Chapel beat Mater Dei, 16-14, 15-11.

In the Liberty Christian girls’ volleyball tournament:

Liberty Christian 2, Santa Monica Lighthouse Church 0--Felicia Jao was the tournament’s most valuable player for Liberty Christian, which won the championship match, 15-13, 15-8. Chrissy Davis and Jenny Houser made the all-tournament team for Liberty Christian.
