Wide receiver Keary Colbert of Hueneme, one of the top college prospects in the state, is questionable for the Vikings’ home opener against Hawthorne on Friday night because of a bruised right knee.

Colbert, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior, was injured in a 65-30 season-opening loss to Alemany on Sept 10.

“We’re just going to have to see how he feels,” said Tony Pinedo, Hueneme offensive coordinator. “We won’t make a decision until Friday.”

Colbert, who had 31 receptions for 769 yards and nine touchdowns last year, has two catches for 69 yards and a touchdown this season.

Colbert’s injury has allowed Dwayne Taylor to become an integral part of the offense. Taylor, a 5-11, 185-pound junior, rushed for approximately 1,400 yards on the junior varsity last year.

He gained 27 yards in four carries against Alemany and rushed for 102 yards in seven carries and caught two passes for 65 yards and a touchdown in a 36-20 loss to Daytona Beach Mainland on Saturday in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

“He’s become a player for us,” Pinedo said.
