Wright to Lead National Team in Water Polo

John Wright, women’s water polo coach at Golden West College, has been selected to coach the U.S. junior national women’s team for the next two years.

In the last three years, Wright has guided Golden West to a 102-2-2 record and three consecutive state championships. He has been an assistant coach with the U.S. junior national program for the past three years.

Wright will lead the junior national team in the Pan American Junior Championships Aug. 4-13 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, and in the Junior World Championships in Perth, Australia, in 2001.

Sunceray Chamblee, a three-year starting goaltender for the Carlsbad High water polo team, will play at UC Irvine this fall, her father, Orby, said.

SOCCER

Rich Breza has resigned as Irvine High boys’ soccer coach, Athletic Director Erik Terry said.

Breza said he wanted to devote more time to coaching his Irvine Strikers club team. Irvine was Sea View League champion last season.

SOFTBALL

Two players at Foothill High School have signed letters of intent to play college softball, Coach Joe Gonzalez said.

Rachel Kitchens signed with Texas A&M;, which has been ranked nationally this season. Amber Dragonmir, a left fielder, will play at Sacramento State.

SWIMMING

The Golden West Invitational scheduled for today at Golden West College has been canceled because only five teams entered.

VOLLEYBALL

Setter Alexis Cochrane of El Dorado High has signed to play volleyball at William and Mary, according to her father, Mike.

Cochrane was named most valuable player in the Empire League last season and is currently competing for the Saddleback Valley Volleyball Club.

* Jenna Guerrero, an All-Southern Section Division IV selection, has signed to play with Westmont. Guerrero, a two-time first-team All-Olympic League selection, helped the Eagles win the Division IV-A championship last season.
