Double Loss Puts Sheng in 4th

The No. 7-seeded team of Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks and Chad Harris of Aurora, Colo., finished fourth in the boys’ 18 division doubles competition at the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships after a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 loss to Scott Schnugg of Medford, Ore., and Chip Webb of Chattanooga, Tenn., Friday in Palm Springs.

The top-seeded team of Tres Davis of Austin, Texas, and Robby Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., defeated Sheng and Harris, 6-1, 6-4, in a semifinal earlier in the day.

Lester Cook of Calabasas and Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey won the boys’ 16 doubles third-place match by default over Matthew Loucks of Irvine and Brian Morton of Costa Mesa.

No. 2-seeded Brian Baker of Nashville, Tenn., and Jonathan Stokke of Chapel Hill, N.C., beat third-seeded Cook and Bauer, 7-5, 6-3, in a semifinal.

TRACK AND FIELD

Lisa Wygant of Camarillo High, the 1998 Southern Section Division I champion in the girls’ high jump, will attend Yale in the fall.

Wygant, who tied for third in the high jump in the Division I final last year, also considered UCLA.

She has a best of 5-6 in the high jump and is the defending Pacific View League champion in that event, the triple jump, 100 high hurdles and 300 lows.

BASEBALL

* Cal Lutheran (21-6-2) is ranked No. 13 in the Collegiate Baseball Division III poll. The Kingsmen are the top-ranked team in California.

BASKETBALL

* Campbell Hall will hold summer camps for boys and girls in grades 2-8 on June 19-23, July 10-14, July 17-21 and July 31-Aug. 4 at its North Hollywood campus.

* Camarillo High is hosting a clinic for girls 6-15 on Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30-6:40 p.m.

Cost is $30 per person and includes pitching, hitting and defensive instruction.

FISHING

* The 10th Family Fishing Derby at Piru Lake is scheduled May 20, with registration at 6 a.m. and weigh-in deadline at 2 p.m. for youth and children divisions and 3:30 p.m. for adults.

Deadline for pre-registration is May 16. Pre-registration costs: family ticket (two adults) $32; adult (16 and over) $15, youth (12-15) $10, children (6-11) $7; minnows (3-5) free; senior citizens (55 and over) $10.
