Pierce Squeezes Orange Coast

Second-seeded Pierce College finished with a 14-9 run in the fifth game and defeated Orange Coast College, 8-15, 15-13, 11-15, 15-10, 15-11, in the first round of the Southern California regional men’s volleyball playoffs Tuesday night at Pierce.

Beau Daniels had nine digs, 75 assists and five blocks, Yoni Shalev had 11 kills, nine digs and six blocks, and Lance Walker had 43 kills before suffering cramps midway through the fourth game for Pierce (18-5), which is seeking its second consecutive appearance in the final.

Pierce, runner-up in the South Coast Conference behind Long Beach, will face Grossmont at Irvine College on Friday at 7 p.m. in the semifinals.

BASEBALL

Oxnard 6, Ventura 0--Ernie Borjas pitched a six-hitter and Josh Miller hit a two-run double for the Condors (15-21, 8-14) in a Western State Conference Northern Division victory at Oxnard.

Canyons 10, Citrus 4--Chris Mayberry had a double, triple, home run and four runs batted in in a WSC Southern Division victory for the Cougars at Citrus.

Eric Ballew had a home run, double, single and three RBIs for Canyons (20-15, 15-7).

The Master’s 6, Concordia 5--Josh Higgins (12-2) scattered nine hits, struck out seven and walked two in eight innings to help the Mustangs (30-7) post their sixth consecutive victory at Concordia.

SOFTBALL

Canyons 6, Santa Monica 2--Sandra Rodriguez had two hits, including a run-scoring double, to help the Cougars finish undefeated in WSC Southern Division play at Santa Monica.

Danielle Proctor had two hits for the Cougars (37-5, 21-0).
