Singles Players Carry Harvard-Westlake in Showdown
Jesse Ferlianto swept three singles matches and Harvard-Westlake High defeated Los Alamitos, 14-4, in a nonleague match between two of Southern California’s top boys’ tennis teams Wednesday at Studio City Golf and Tennis.
Ferlianto, a sophomore and the Wolverines’ No. 3 singles player, defeated Kevin McQuaid, 6-1, John Mano, 6-2, and George Canete, 6-1.
Aron Gortman, the Wolverines’ No. 2 singles player, also recorded a sweep, winning by default over McQuaid.
David Frankel and Alan Haldeman won three sets at No. 1 doubles for Harvard-Westlake (18-3), ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division I and No. 1 in The Times’ regional poll.
Los Alamitos is ranked No. 4 in Division I and No. 3 in The Times’ Orange County rankings.
Campbell Hall 9, Hart 9--Adam Zunder swept singles play at No. 1 and the Vikings won a nonleague match on games at Hart.
Campbell Hall won the tiebreaker, 78-75, in total games.
Ross Erlich and Michael Shrage won two of three games at No. 1 doubles for the Campbell Hall (6-8).
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
Taft def. Van Nuys, 15-3, 16-14, 15-3--Bryan Capper had 12 kills for the Toreadors in a West Valley League victory at Taft.
Mike Gledhill had 10 kills for the Toreadors (13-0, 10-0), ranked No. 3.
Highland def. Littlerock, 15-3, 15-12, 15-6--Mike Kennedy had 10 kills for the Bulldogs in a Golden League victory at Littlerock.
Trent Sorensen had six kills for the Bulldogs (10-0, 7-0), ranked No. 2.
BOYS’ GOLF
Campbell Hall 199, Montclair Prep 207--Tony Kim shot a two-under-par 34 for the Vikings (16-1, 8-0) in a Delphic League victory at Balboa Golf Course in Encino.
Kim eagled the 390-yard par-four seventh hole and had a birdie on the 503-yard par-five fifth.
Montclair Prep is 2-11, 0-8.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
The Master’s 11, Westmont 7--Jeremy Griffin had three hits and drove in four runs in a nonconference victory for the Mustangs at The Master’s.
Mike Ploharz (11-0) struck out five, walked one and allowed five runs in eight innings for The Master’s (30-7).
Chris Kollmann had two hits for the Mustangs, including his second home run during a four-run seventh.
Ryan Eisle had three hits and Mike Clifton hit a home run for Westmont.
Cal State Northridge 13, UC Riverside 12--Tim Arroyo had three hits, Jason Gorman had two hits and three RBIs, and the Matadors (18-26) won a nonconference game at Northridge.
