From Staff Reports

Brian Anderson of Burroughs High made a name for himself in the 1,600 meters last year, but the senior clocked a school record of 1:53.7 to win the 800 in a Foothill League track and field meet against Saugus at College of the Canyons on Thursday.

Anderson, defending league champion in the 1,600, ran 54.7 for the first lap of the 400-meter track and the second in 59 to break the school mark of 1:54.05, which was converted from a 1:54.72 clocking for 880 yards by Paul Murphy in 1979.

The time also moved him to sixth on the state performer list this year.

“We thought [Brian] had a chance at something like this,” assistant John Peebles of Burroughs said. “So we kept him out of the 1,600 [Thursday] so he could run a fresh 800.”
