Lucero Leaves Vanguard for Long Beach State

Darrick Lucero has resigned after one season as women’s volleyball coach at Vanguard to become the top assistant for the men’s volleyball team at Long Beach State.

Lucero, who led Marina High to section and state girls’ volleyball titles in 1997, also resigned as the Marina boys’ volleyball coach after the 2000 season.

“I liked Vanguard, but this is a better opportunity for me,” Lucero said.

SOFTBALL

Rosary High catcher Danielle Guerra has accepted a scholarship to attend Caldwell (N.J.) College, according to her coach, Tom Tice.

Guerra was a four-year starter for the Royals, and twice received all-league honors.

MISCELLANEOUS

Huntington Beach High School Athletic Director Dave Van Hoorebeke announced the Oilers’ have filled the following varsity coaching positions:

Benji Medure has been hired to coach baseball, Austin Cathey will be the new wrestling coach, Will Cummins has been selected to coach girl’s soccer and Chris Ganz has been hired to coach girl’s tennis.

Medure coached at Riverside Poly High for the past seven years, the last three as the hitting and infield coach at the varsity level and will replace Mike Dodd, who coached at the varsity level at Huntington Beach for the past 19 years and left to take the head football coaching job at Marina.

Cathey is a Huntington Beach graduate who was on the wrestling team at Cal State Fullerton and had been an assistant coach for the Oilers. Cathey takes over for Shawn Schaefer, who coached for one year.

Cummins is a graduate of Azusa Pacific University and has coached boy’s soccer at Damien High School and will replace Guigui Fereria, who held the position for the last two years.

Ganz coached at La Quinta High and is currently the boys tennis coach for the Oilers. Ganz is a graduate of Huntington Beach and takes over for Eric Randz, who held the position for the past year.
