Angela Won of Irvine advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship by winning two matches Thursday at Pumpkin Ridge in North Plains, Ore.

Won, who will be a junior at University High, defeated Yunny Cho of Bradenton, Fla., 1 up, in the second round and then ousted Christy Larrimore of Severna Park, Md., 2 up, in the third round.

Won will play Erica Blasberg of Corona, the stroke-play medalist, in a quarterfinal match today. The semifinals are also today at 1 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2. The final is Saturday at 10:30 a.m.

DIVING

Derek Starks of Mission Viejo won the boys’ 14-15 platform event at the National Junior Diving Championships in Mission Viejo.

Starks, who trains with the Nadadores and has qualified for the U.S. World Junior Team, finished with 420.09 points. Teammate Michael Hilde of Whittier was second with 396.66.

RACQUETBALL

The Los Cab Open, the first in a series of racquetball tournaments hosted by the Los Caballeros Racquet and Sports Club in Fountain Valley, begins today at 5 p.m. and continues Saturday and Sunday, beginning each day at 8 a.m.

The tournament, open to the public, will feature men’s and women’s singles and doubles and mixed doubles categories based on competitors’ genders, levels of play and age groups.

GYMNASTICS

The Titan Gymnastics Academy will be giving a demonstration, followed by two hours of free instruction to youths ages 3 to 16, Aug. 12 at Cal State Fullerton.

A one-hour demonstration will start at noon, then safety certified instructors will show basic skills on men’s and women’s equipment. For information, call (714) 278-2089.

SOFTBALL

Sarah Hughes, who pitched and played first base for Calvary Chapel, has signed with Biola, according to her mother, Sue.

Hughes batted .408 with 16 runs batted in last season for the Olympic League champion.
