Ex-Titan Coach Hawking Lands at Anaheim

Former Cal State Fullerton basketball Coach Bob Hawking has been hired as boys’ basketball coach at Anaheim High.

Colonist Athletic Director Dave Torres said Hawking also will teach physical education.

“It’s a real plus for our program,” Torres said.

Hawking replaces Jose Marcos Castellanos, who had a two-year record of 24-26 and guided the Colonists into the Southern Section playoffs last season.

Hawking, who had a six-year record at Fullerton of 59-103, could not be reached for comment. He resigned at Fullerton with four games left in the regular season and the Titans finished with a record of 8-19. Hawking started at Fullerton as an assistant in 1992.

* Senior forward Ben Jones scored 29 points, including seven in overtime, to lead UC Irvine to an 84-80 victory over the Victoria All-Stars in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Victoria, British Columbia.

Jones was 11 of 19 from the field and had 10 rebounds and four steals. Junior guard Jerry Green had 22 points, five assists and five steals for the Anteaters.

UC Irvine is 3-0 on its Canadian tour and plays Victoria in the final game of the trip tonight.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Keao Burdine of La Habra High has committed to play at USC, Highlander Coach Troy Abbey said. Burdine, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter, played with future USC teammates Toni Anderson and Katie Olsovsky on the U.S. Junior National team this summer.

Burdine, a two-time All-Southern Section selection, helped La Habra win the Division II-A title in 1998 and reach the Division II-A semifinals last year.

The Waves, two points behind the Bay Area Seals for a playoff spot, finish the regular season with two road games--at Boston tonight and at Connecticut Saturday.

Orange County (11-14-1, 50 points), which is coming off a victory over Tennessee last Friday, are playing two of the A-League’s worst teams. Boston is 7-16-3 and Connecticut is 1-18-8.

The Waves could finish as high as sixth in the Western Conference with two victories--they trail El Paso (11-13-2) by three points. The top three teams in each division qualify for the playoffs, plus next two best teams in each conference.

That means either Indiana (7-15-4, 35 points) or U.S. Pro-40 (7-18-1, 30 points), the third- and fourth-place teams in the Central Division of the Western Conference, will qualify for the playoffs even though neither team can finish with more points than Orange County, which is in the Western Conference’s Pacific Division.
