Marymount Delivers Division IV State Title
This time, there would not be a championship loss.
Christina Hinds had 15 kills, Caralyn Thomason added seven kills and Marymount won the State Division IV girls’ volleyball championship with a 15-4, 15-10, 15-4 victory over Atherton Menlo on Saturday at Cypress College.
Marymount (28-4) lost to La Reina in the Southern Section Division IV-AA championship two weeks ago, but rebounded with four victories in the state playoffs.
“I don’t think anybody was going to let our seniors get away without a state title,” said setter Haley Jorgensborg, one of the top juniors in Southern California.
Hinds, an outside hitter who has committed to William and Mary, sparked a seven-point run in the third game with five aces that staked Marymount an 11-2 lead.
Jorgensborg had 35 assists and five kills for Marymount, which also won a state championship in 1991.
North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake d. Los Gatos, 15-7, 15-8, 15-7--The Wolverines won their fifth--and most important--title of the season in the Division III championship.
Courtney Schultz had 18 kills and Karalyn Kuchenbecker added 13 for the Wolverines, who did not lose a game in four state playoff matches.
Harvard-Westlake (27-2) won a Mission League championship and a Southern Section Division III-AA title. The Wolverines also won upper-echelon regular-season tournaments in Hawaii and Santa Barbara.
