Newport Harbor Edges Marina in Water Polo

Sophomore Annie Wight had two goals and four steals for fifth-ranked Newport Harbor, which defeated No. 4 Marina, 6-5, in a nonleague girls’ water polo game Saturday at Newport Harbor.

Erin Wilson scored her fifth goal with 52 seconds remaining to pull Marina (1-1) to within 6-5. The Vikings had one last possession, but Wilson’s shot in the final seconds hit the goal post.

In the second quarter, Katherine Belden scored on two four-meter penalty shots, converting the ejections of Wight and Jessica Ball, to help Newport Harbor move ahead, 4-1.

Belden and Jenna Booth each scored two goals for the Sailors (1-1).

At the Villa Park tournament:

Edison 9, Villa Park 5--Senior Amanda Burden scored five goals for Edison (4-1) in the third-place game. Cindy Henn scored three goals for Villa Park (3-3), which played down one player for the final 1 1/2 quarters after being whistled for a brutality call.

Carlsbad defeated Edison, 9-6, in the semifinals.

At the Torrey Pines boys’ soccer tournament:

Capistrano Valley 3, San Diego St. Augustine 2--Jeff Serafina scored twice as the Cougars (8-0-2) beat St. Augustine in a pool-play game.

Greg Robertson had two goals as Capistrano Valley tied Vista Rancho Buena Vista, 3-3, in the second game.

In the Magnolia girls’ soccer tournament:

Loara 1, Temple City 0--Junior midfielder Lauren Lappin’s goal off an assist from Jenna Wheeler lifted the Saxons into Monday’s championship game against Rosary.

Loara defeated Garden Grove, 4-0, in the second round.

Rosary 1, Long Beach Millikan 1 (Rosary advances on penalty kicks, 4-2)--Amie Giusiana scored the tying goal with seven minutes remaining in regulation for the Royals (6-2), who defeated Moreno Valley Canyon Springs, 5-0, in a quarterfinal.

Katie Lennon had five assists in the two games for Rosary.

In the Mater Dei tournament:

No. 1 Capistrano Valley 1, Mater Dei 0--Freshman Kim Horn scored her fourth goal of the season for the Cougars (3-1), who finished sixth in the tournament after losing, 1-0, to eventual champion Arcadia in the first round.

No. 2 Aliso Niguel 0, No. 5 Mission Viejo 0--Sophomore goalie Katie Wright had 13 saves for Mission Viejo (2-0-2) and sophomore Marissa Welliver had 12 saves for the Wolverines (5-0-1), who finished third in the tournament.

No. 4 Esperanza 2, Foothill 0--The Aztecs (3-0-3), who tied Ventura Buena, 3-3, in the second round, finished fifth in the tournament.

In the Norwalk Glenn tournament:

Whittier Christian 9, Buena Park 0--Amanda Plant scored four goals in a pool-play game for Whittier Christian (3-1). Plant also scored three goals in an 8-0 win over Industry Workman.

In the South Torrance tournament

El Dorado 3, Torrance Bishop Montgomery 1--Robin Bennett scored two goals and Darci Gwartz added another as El Dorado (3-3-1) won a consolation game. Earlier, Bennett and Gwartz each scored one goal in a 3-2 quarterfinal loss to L.A. Marymount.

At the Clovis wrestling tournament:

Calvary Chapel 40, Vacaville 18--Calvary Chapel won 10 of 13 weight classes, including Willie Parks’ 5-3 decision over defending state champion Beau McCoy at 189 pounds, to win the tournament final.

The Eagles won eight dual meets Saturday and Mario Estrada, Anthony Rodriguez, John Jackson, Steve Esparza, Frank Gill and Parks went undefeated.
