Fowler Commits to Michigan State

Sheridan Fowler of Thousand Oaks High committed to Michigan State, Lancer Coach Gary Walin said.

Fowler was recruited as a first baseman, the position she will play for Thousand Oaks this season after playing third base last season and having an 11-6 pitching record as a sophomore.

TENNIS

* No. 2-seeded Joachim Johansson of Sweden defeated No. 14-seeded Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks, 6-4, 6-4, in a boys’ 18 first-round match Tuesday in the Orange Bowl tournament at Key Biscayne, Fla.

BASKETBALL

* Crescenta Valley High is helping former player Drew Haberl find a bone marrow donor for his 5-year-old son, Zachary, who has leukemia. A nationwide search is underway to find a match.

MISCELLANY

* Dodger outfielder Shawn Green and Olympic swim champion Lenny Krayzelburg will be inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on Jan. 20 at the West Valley Jewish Community Center in West Hills.

Other inductees are former Grant High tennis coach Milt Nemiroff, former El Camino Real softball pitcher Beth Silverman Kaminkow, boxer Martin Denkin, gymnast Deborah Mink, masters water polo player Robert Myman, media representatives Andrew Bernstein, Alan Epstein, Rich Levin and Ephraim Moxson.

Robert Breitbard and the late Eugene Klein and Harry Ornest will be honored with the pillar of achievement award.

ATHLETICS

* Community activist Duke Russell will speak to the L.A. Community College board today in an effort to restart baseball at Mission, West L.A., Trade Tech and Southwest colleges. He hopes to draw speakers to rally against Mission reneging on a plan to have soccer next school year.

The board meets at 3:30 p.m. at Valley College’s Monarch Hall.

Russell said that although Mission plans to bring back baseball and softball in the spring of 2002, college administrators have decided to not field soccer teams next season because the teams would have to practice and play at Pierce.
