Mater Dei Wins Big in Florida Tourney

The Mater Dei boys’ soccer team’s trip to Florida paid off with a championship as it won the Puma International title by defeating Bloomingdale (Fla.), 6-1, Saturday in the final at the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Nick Miller and Ruben Rosales each scored two goals and Matt Fennell had two assists and a goal for the Monarchs (13-0-2), ranked second in the county.

Fennell scored in the eighth minute off an assist from Eric Rolwing. Bloomingdale (11-2) tied it 12 minutes later.

Miller gave the Monarchs the lead for good when he scored in the 21st minute off an assist from Fennell. He scored again a minute later off an assist from Mark Thornberry. Randy Poggio also scored for Mater Dei.

Bloomingdale was the 1995 and 1998 Florida state champion and runner-up in 1999.

In the Brea Olinda soccer tournament:

No. 1 Woodbridge 2, No. 8 Dana Hills 1--Matt Languis scored the game-winner off an assist from Amir Shaffi in the 65th minute for the Warriors (8-1-2) in the final.

Pieter Berger gave Woodbridge a 1-0 halftime lead off an assist from Roy Chingarian in the 30th minute.

Forrest Smith scored for Dana Hills (7-1-2) with seven minutes remaining.

Brea Olinda 4, West Hills Chaminade 0--After a scoreless first half, Brea Olinda’s Ken Edgar scored a goal in the 50th minute to help the Wildcats win the third-place game.

Trevor Peters, Graig Ward and Danny Yezarski also scored in the second half for Brea Olinda (9-1).

Fullerton 1, Sonora 0--Fullerton won the consolation game when Sonora failed to show up for the game.

Servite 1, Diamond Bar 1 (Servite wins on penalty kicks, 3-2)--After Servite converted its sixth penalty kick, Friar goalie James Towers blocked Diamond Bar’s kick to secure the consolation victory for Servite (5-3-1).

Raphael Rueda scored in the 15th minute to give Diamond Bar (7-1-2) the lead, but Jeff Murphy scored the tying goal 16 minutes later off an assist from Matt Willis.

Sunny Hills 2, Chino 0--Juan Quezada scored both goals for Sunny Hills (3-6-1) in the second half.

Quezada’s first goal was unassisted in the 64th minute and he scored again four minutes later off an assist from Paul Ortega.
