Paul Castillo, athletic director at one of the Southern Section’s largest schools, was named Wednesday an assistant commissioner for the section.

Castillo, who oversees athletics at Paramount High, was approved by the section’s executive council to replace Harold Cebrun, who left Jan. 1 to become superintendent of the Lynwood Unified School District.

“This is a great opportunity for me and something I consider a pinnacle of my 12 years in athletic administration,” Castillo said.

Castillo will administer basketball, swimming and diving, track and field, cross-country and boys’ water polo. His first day will be March 1.

Castillo, 57, earned his degree in physical education/health science from San Fernando Valley College, now Cal State Northridge, in 1965, and began teaching the next year at San Fernando Junior High. He joined Paramount in 1969 and coached boys’ and girls’ tennis, football and basketball until 1998, when he became athletic director.

Castillo was named state athletic director of the year for 1991-92.

Other finalists for the assistant commissioner’s position were Jim Perry, athletic director at La Quinta, and Sharen Caperton, girls’ athletic director at Brea Olinda.
