Fontana Names Smith as Football Coach

Richard Smith, who guided Bloomington High to Southern Section Division VIII football titles in 1998 and 1999, has been named coach at Fontana, replacing Bob Stangel Jr., who resigned in January in the aftermath of a violent incident that occurred after a playoff loss.

Several Fontana players attacked Loyola coaches and players after a 28-7 first-round defeat Nov. 19 at Pierce College. Thirteen Fontana players were suspended from school and two were expelled for their roles in the incident.

Senior Anthony Robinson, 18, last week pleaded no contest to one misdemeanor count of battery on school property and a judge sentenced him to three years probation.
