Crescenta Valley Gets a Quick Start

Crescenta Valley High scored the first 10 points but had to withstand a fourth-quarter charge by Santa Maria to pull out a 79-70 victory in a first round Southern Section Division I-AA boys’ basketball playoff game Wednesday night at Crescenta Valley.

Freshman guard Jimmy Goffredo scored 24 points for the Falcons (22-5), including three three-pointers, and Chris Tarne had 17 points and seven assists.

Santa Maria (10-14) pulled to within 73-68 with 52 seconds remaining on a reverse layup by Chui Frausto, but James Jenkins rattled in a 10-foot jump shot to give Crescenta Valley breathing room.

Goffredo added two free throws and Tarne hit a jump shot at the buzzer.

Jenkins made seven of 11 shots and finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for Crescenta Valley, ranked No. 7 in the region by The Times.

The Falcons built an 8-0 lead in the opening minute on an alley-oop dunk by Jenkins and three-pointers by Goffredo and Tarne.

Jenkins’ offensive rebound and fall-away bank shot pushed the lead to 10-0 and forced Coach Mark Sivelery of Santa Maria to call a timeout.

The Saints, who gained an at-large bid to the playoffs after finishing fourth in the Northern League, trailed by 12, at the end of the first quarter, 19-7, and at halftime, 41-29.

Jenkins’ 10-foot jumper gave the Falcons their biggest lead, 57-37 with 3:35 left in the third quarter.

Channel Islands 78, Glendale 58--Manny Berrelleza, who had six rebounds, and Brian Long, who had 12 assists, each scored 17 points to lead host Channel Islands over Glendale in a Division I-AA playoff game.

Gilbert Yousefian had 23 points for Glendale.

DIVISION I-A

Burbank 58, Mira Costa 51--Frank Reed had four three-pointers and 21 points for the Bulldogs (16-9) in a first-round victory at Burbank.

Royal 67, Damien 60--Adam Segal scored 33 points and the Highlanders (14-11) won in the first round at Royal.

Nogales 63, Ventura 56--Mike Derse had 17 points and Tyler Ebell added 16 for the Cougars (18-9), who couldn’t hold a two-point lead after three quarters and lost at Ventura.

Saugus 75, Buena 72--Tim Tampus scored 25 points, including five three-pointers, and Mike Grisanti had 27 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocked shots for the Centurions in a first-round victory at Saugus.

St. John Bosco 55, Hueneme 53--Eric Watkins scored 17 points and had seven assists and Anthony Camper added 14 points, but the Vikings fell in first round.

DIVISION II-A

Newbury Park 62, Dos Pueblos 61--Javad Esfandiary’s two free throws with 36 seconds left clinched a first-round victory for the host Panthers in a wild-card game.

Will Svitek had 21 points and nine rebounds and Matt Currie added 15 points for Newbury Park (12-12).

DIVISION III-AA

Harvard-Westlake 76, Ganesha 70--Russell Lakey scored 33 points and senior Chris Hooks had 17 points for the fourth-seeded Wolverines in a first-round victory at Harvard-Westlake.

Eric Geffner added 16 points and 12 rebounds for Harvard-Westlake (21-5), which overcame a 39-33 halftime deficit with a 17-4 run early in the third quarter.

Chaminade 60, South Pasadena 36--Scott Borchart had 20 points and 14 rebounds in a first-round Division III-AA victory for the Eagles at South Pasadena (17-8).

Arthur D’Egidio added 11 points for Chaminade (17-8).

DIVISION V-AA

Campbell Hall 72, Pasadena Poly 36--Jesse Foster had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead for the host Vikings in a victory.

Flintridge Prep 58, Windward 48--Devin Brown scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half for the Rebels in a first-round victory at Flintridge Prep.

Montclair Prep 79, St. Margaret’s 52--Josiah Johnson had 28 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocked shots and the Mounties (14-12) won in the first round at St. Margaret’s (14-10).

Grace Brethren 65, Dunn 51--Robert Serra had 21 points and seven rebounds to help the the Lancers (18-7) win a first-round game at Grace Brethren.

Bell-Jeff 70, Brethren Christian 51--Carlos Arroyo scored 21 of his 22 points in the second half for the Guards after picking up two early fouls in a first-round victory at Bell-Jeff. Mike Yildiz had 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Bell-Jeff.
