INCREASING NET WORTH

L’Tanya Robnett is carrying on the family business, punching the clock and assaulting the scoreboard.

The Harvard-Westlake High senior is the latest in a long line of prolific basketball scorers.

Her father, George, was an All-American at Cal State Northridge in the 1970s and still holds the school’s single-season scoring record.

NBA stars Tracy Murray and Lamond Murray and former college standout Cameron Murray are among Robnett’s cousins.

“I guess it runs in the family,” said Robnett, whose brother, Brandon, is a standout junior high player at Campbell Hall.

Robnett is averaging 21.3 points for Harvard-Westlake (21-7), which hosts Corona del Mar (22-5) tonight at 7:30 in the Southern Section Division III-AA quarterfinals.

A Harvard-Westlake victory would clinch the team’s third berth in the state playoffs since Robnett transferred from Palmdale as a sophomore.

Wherever Robnett has played, she has won. Palmdale and Harvard-Westlake are a combined 102-23 and have won three league championships with Robnett in the lineup.

The Wolverines won a section title in 1998 and advanced to the state Division III final last season.

“She’s used to winning,” Coach Brian Taylor said. “There’s nothing quite like the kind of experience she brings.”

Until this season, Robnett was always a secondary offensive threat. She averaged 10 points as a sophomore and junior.

But with two starters lost to graduation and another to injury, Taylor asked Robnett last summer to become a go-to player.

He told his 5-foot-10 swing player that he expected her to take 15 and 20 shots a game.

“It was a big change for me,” she said. “At first, I was scared my teammates would think I was a ball hog or being selfish.”

That hasn’t been the case.

“I like the fact that [L’Tanya] can finish,” said teammate Brooke Porter, one of the region’s top point guards. “She gives me most of my assists.”

This whole scoring thing is beginning to grow on Robnett.

“It’s kind of exciting to know my team counts on me for points when we need them most,” she said.

Robnett has rarely disappointed, climbing to third on Harvard-Westlake’s career scoring list with 1,307 points. She trails Omelogo Udeze (1,632), The Times’ 1999 Valley player of the year, and Porter (1,373), who compiled their totals in four seasons.

Had Robnett began at Harvard-Westlake as a freshman, she’d be close to the record.

But late starts are nothing new to Robnett, who didn’t play organized basketball until the eighth grade.

“When I was younger, I wasn’t into basketball,” she said. “But eventually, after being around it forever, I just gave in.”
