Vanguard Picks Up Victory

Vanguard moved a step closer to the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s basketball title Tuesday with a 68-46 victory over host Christian Heritage.

The Lions (25-5, 4-3) are tied with Azusa Pacific with one conference game remaining, Saturday against Hope International.

Laura Lee scored 16 points and Becky Huddle had 13 for Vanguard.

In GSAC men’s basketball:

Christian Heritage 77, Vanguard 65--Kenny Burgess scored 22 points and John Kohlhaas had 14 for visiting Vanguard, which trailed by nine at the half.

Westmont 70, Concordia 67--Joel Burgess scored 16 points for Concordia, which couldn’t make up a four-point halftime deficit against host Westmont.

In GSAC baseball:

Concordia 11, Vanguard 3--Junior Rick Stockton went 6 1/3 innings, allowing only two runs on six hits. Matt Marquart went the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing only one run on two hits.

Jeff Curio’s two-run single in the fifth gave visiting Concordia a 6-0 lead. Curio added an RBI single in the eighth to make it 8-2.

In nonconference softball:

Cal State San Bernardino 2-1, Vanguard 1-2--Pitcher Gina Liebengood (4-2) won the second game for Vanguard (6-5) but gave up two runs for a loss in the first game of the doubleheader, which went eight innings. Liebengood hit a double to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game, driving in Sarah Ashley for the winning run.

Hope International 11-8, Pomona-Pitzer 2-5--Sarah Yarbrough’s second solo homer was part of a five-run seventh inning as Hope International overcame a 5-3 deficit in the second game. In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Stanford 4, UC Irvine 1--Ty Loomis had 21 kills and nine digs, and Cory Hinkle made 67 assists and seven digs for UCI (6-8, 3-6). Freshman Curt Toppel, who leads the nation in kills per game (8.44), had 34 kills for host Stanford (6-7, 6-5).
