Shelton Shines Brightly for Chatsworth With 23 Points

Sometimes, Chatsworth High’s Ashley Shelton gets eclipsed by teammate Liz Sun.
But not Friday, when Shelton’s all-around play and free-throw shooting down the stretch sparked the Chancellors to a 50-46 victory over North Hollywood in a nonleague game at North Hollywood.
Shelton, the Chancellors’ point guard, had 23 points--including 15 in the second half--and four assists. She scored eight points in the fourth quarter, making four of six free throws in the last 23 seconds to extend a 46-45 Chatsworth lead and seal the victory over the Huskies, ranked No. 9 in the region by The Times.
The score was tied at 21 with just over six minutes to go in the third quarter, but Chatsworth (9-4) claimed control with a 13-4 run. Shelton scored seven points in that span.
“She’s actually the leader of our team,” said Coach Raquel Alotis of Chatsworth. “People don’t always realize it, because they see the flash of Liz Sun, but Ashley runs our team. She controls the game. She’s the one who’s really key for us.”
Sun, a sophomore who averages 12.6 points, eight rebounds, almost three assists and five steals, did her part, scoring 13 points and getting some clutch baskets and five steals in the second half.
The Chancellors also got strong play by reserve Stacey Rosenholz, who had eight points, two rebounds and two steals.
