Canyon Snaps Saugus’ Winning Streak, 63-61

Thomas Kemp made a layup with 35 seconds left to put Canyon High ahead, 59-58, and the host Cowboys hung on for a 63-61 victory over Saugus in a Foothill League boys’ basketball opener Saturday night.

Tim Tampus’ three-point basket with 46 seconds to play put Saugus (11-6) ahead, 58-57.

Canyon (9-7) made 10 of 12 free throws.

Jeff Grucelski scored a game-high 17 points for Canyon.

The loss snapped Saugus’ eight-game winning streak.

Harvard-Westlake 78, Alemany 76--Harvard-Westlake, ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times, had a 2-1 advantage in 27-point performances in a Mission League game at Alemany.

Russell Lakey and Eric Geffner each scored 27 for the Wolverines (11-4, 2-0) and Byron Joseph scored 27 points for the Indians (6-9, 1-1).

Lakey had 12 rebounds, 10 assists and six steals, and Geffner grabbed 13 rebounds.

Joseph had seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Reny Maynard had 23 points and eight rebounds for Alemany.

Bell-Jeff 68, Cathedral 58--Casey Markovich scored 15 of his 24 points in the first half for host Bell-Jeff in a Santa Fe League opener.

Andy Bunning had 11 of his 13 points and 10 of his 15 rebounds in the second half for the Guards (11-4).

Markovich made four three-point shots. He grabbed 11 rebounds.

Mike Yildiz had 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Bell-Jeff.

Campbell Hall 64, Pacific Hills 57--Hassan Bassiri had 20 points and Jesse Foster added 10 points and had 12 rebounds for the Vikings (12-5, 1-0) in a Delphic League victory at Murphy High.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

San Marcos 59, Santa Paula 58--Sarah Kolbeck scored eight of her 19 points in the fourth quarter for host Santa Paula (11-6) in a nonleague game.

Sarah Ruiz made four three-point baskets and finished with a game-high 26 points for Santa Paula.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Crescenta Valley 2, Bishop Montgomery 0--Julie Herrold and Shannon Clissold each scored for Crescenta Valley (8-2-2), ranked No. 8 by The Times, in a nonleague game at the Glendale Sports Complex.

Kennedy 5, Narbonne 2--Courtney Diamond and Jennifer Bernson each scored two goals to help Kennedy (4-1-2) win the Monroe tournament title.
