Ventura’s Surge Zaps Santa Barbara

Ventura High used scoring bursts in the first and third quarters to defeat Santa Barbara, 60-48, in a Channel League girls’ basketball game Thursday night at Ventura.

The Cougars (15-0, 3-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, were outscored in the second quarter, 16-8, and allowed Santa Barbara (12-6, 2-1) to get within five points at halftime.

But Ventura outscored the Dons, 20-8, in the third quarter.

Katy O’Brien had 18 points and seven assists for Ventura. Kristine Gleisberg added 11 points and Alex Gientke had 10.

Alemany 70, Chaminade 34--Kate Beckler had 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals for the No. 3 Indians (14-3, 3-0) and helped hold Christina Zdenek to one point in a Mission League game at L.A. Baptist.

Zdenek, who averages 13 points, attempted only three shots for Chaminade (8-8, 1-3).

Buena 79, Dos Pueblos 28--Kelly Greathouse scored 21 of her 25 points and Courtney LaVere scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half to help the No. 2 Bulldogs (14-4, 2-0) take a 48-15 lead en route to a Channel League victory at Buena.

Oxnard 50, Rio Mesa 30--Memory Rhone scored her 11 points in the second half to spark a 32-point outburst and the Yellowjackets (13-5, 3-0) pulled away from Rio Mesa (6-10, 1-1) in a Channel League game at Oxnard.

Paraclete 59, L.A. Baptist 50--Erika Hernandez had 19 points, six rebounds and seven steals for the Spirits (11-5, 2-0) in an Alpha League victory at Paraclete.

Calabasas 59, Campbell Hall 53--Alison Entin scored 30 points, including 15 on three-point baskets, for the Coyotes (4-10) in a nonleague victory over Campbell Hall (10-5) at Calabasas.

Montclair Prep 59, Lighthouse Christian 45--Eshaya Murphy had 24 points and Jasmine Wesley added 18 for host Montclair Prep (13-3).

Notre Dame 68, Louisville 59--Sheila Penn had 28 points and eight rebounds for Notre Dame (12-5, 3-1) in a Mission League game at Louisville (5-7, 2-2). Sara Kelso scored 25 points for Louisville.
