Wolverines Have Rivals on a Mission

Share

Few predicted that the Harvard-Westlake High boys’ basketball team would be 6-0 after the first round of Mission League play.

But that’s what happened, and now teams get a second chance to devise a strategy to deal with Wolverine guard Russell Lakey.

Harvard-Westlake (15-4) hasn’t exactly dominated league opponents, winning most games in the fourth quarter when Lakey takes control. He’s averaging 22.8 points and 5.8 assists.

Notre Dame (15-5, 4-2) and Chaminade (13-5, 4-2), tied for second place, are within striking distance of the Wolverines.

Struggling Crespi (9-10, 1-5) will get the first crack to knock off Harvard-Westlake tonight at 7 in a game at Crespi that will be televised live by Fox Sports Net 2.

Contributing to Harvard-Westlake’s success has been the emergence of several supporting players. Sophomore guard Craig Weinstein is averaging 10.1 points and senior forward Eric Geffner is averaging 14.0 points and 10.7 rebounds.

Loyola is only 2-4 in the Mission League, but sophomore Matt Llewellyn, who lives in Toluca Lake, is averaging 15.2 points and among several quality underclassmen in the Cub program. Loyola’s freshman team is 6-0 in league play, with an average margin of victory exceeding 40 points.
