Squires Looks Elsewhere, But Stays at Cal Lutheran

Scott Squires isn’t sure whether he won or lost. All he knows is he’s still happy.

The Cal Lutheran football coach was one of two finalists for an opening at Humboldt State, a growing Division II program that will offer scholarships for the first time next season.

Dave Atkins, a former assistant at Humboldt and Nevada, got the job, in part because Humboldt administrators weren’t totally convinced Squires wanted to uproot his family and head to Arcata.

“They hired the right guy,” Squires said. “I feel good about the situation I’m in at Cal Lutheran, so I went into the interview at [at Humboldt] with a long list of demands they would have to meet in order to get me to leave.”

Squires, 34, will begin his fifth season with the Kingsmen. He said he has no immediate plans to apply for another job.

Jud Keim, defensive coordinator at Cal Lutheran, has taken a similar post at Gustavus Adolphus, a Division III school in St. Peter, Minn., that plays in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
