Council Bidding for Frozen Four

Share

The Los Angeles Sports Council on Thursday submitted a bid to the NCAA to bring the Frozen Four--the NCAA hockey finals--back to the Arrowhead Pond in 2005 or 2006.

The Frozen Four includes two semifinal games and the national title game on the weekend following the men’s basketball Final Four. The Pond was host for the event in 1999 and a crowd of 14,447, the fifth-highest for an NCAA hockey final in the 1990s, saw Maine defeat New Hampshire, 3-2, in overtime.

The council’s current bid is being made in conjunction with the Pond and the Big West Conference.

“I think the success we had last year is going to be a positive factor for us,” said David Simon, president of LASC. “We’re very hopeful we’ll be invited to be in the final group.”

In two or three weeks, the NCAA will invite groups with the strongest proposals to make in-person presentations to the selection committee, which will convene in mid-July in Idaho.

The NCAA Ice Hockey Committee is expected to announce its site selection in September. Host sites through 2003 are already set.
