Barber Seeks Another Low Round

Tommy Barber of Notre Dame High tops the list of entrants from the region in the CIF-Southern California Golf Assn. championships at The SCGA Members’ Club at Rancho California in Murrieta today.

Barber, who tied for fourth in the Southern Section individual championships at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs on May 22, has shot a combined eight-under par in his previous three tournaments.

Today’s event will include the top four teams from the Southern Section championships and the top two teams from the City, Central and San Diego section tournaments. It will also include the top individuals not on qualifying teams from those sections.

Senior Jay Montes of Sylmar will be playing in his first CIF-SCGA tournament after becoming the first Spartan to win the City title on May 24.

Chatsworth, second to Palisades in the City championships, will be the only team from the region in the final high school tournament of the season.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Rae Stumbough of Nordhoff High, the 1999 state Division IV girls’ cross-country champion, has committed to Cal State Chico.

Stumbough ran career bests of 2:19.69 in the 800 meters and 5:02.77 in the 1,600 to place second in the Southern Section Division IV track and field finals on May 20.

* Nickie Kohlieber of Birmingham High, runner-up in the girls’ pole vault in the 1999 City Section championships, has signed a letter of intent with UC Irvine.

Kohlieber, who has a best of 10-0, was hampered by ankle injuries this season, but tied for third in the City final on May 25.

VOLLEYBALL

* Margot Wallace, a setter for Van Nuys High, has committed to Georgia.

The 5-foot-10 Wallace, who will be a senior in the fall, was an All-City selection last season.

She chose Georgia over Colorado State, Texas A&M;, Kansas State and Tulane.

* Eugene Kim, a 6-7 middle blocker at Alemany, said he will try to walk on to the UCLA men’s team.

Kim, a senior, helped lead Alemany to a 13-4 record and was a second-team All-Mission League selection.

SOFTBALL

* Lindsey Weinstein of Chaminade has been selected player of the year and Anna Russell of Harvard-Westlake was chosen pitcher of the year in the Mission League.

Weinstein, a junior first baseman, batted .386 and led the Eagles to their second consecutive appearance in the Southern Section Division IV final.

Russell, a senior who has committed to the University of San Diego, was 22-3 with a 0.61 earned-run average.

SOCCER

* The Valley United Stars under-14 girls’ team defeated a team from Pennsylvania, 1-0, on Sunday to win the Nike World Championship in Beverton, Ore.

Kandice McLaughlin of West Hills scored the winning goal on an assist from Shari Summers of Valencia. Goalie Kristina DeVries of Westlake had 12 shutouts in the tournament. Terry Davila of Cal State Northridge coached the team.
