Record-Setting Thompson Selected Player of the Year

Pitcher Tim Thompson of Simi Valley Grace Brethren High has been chosen Southern Section Division VI player of the year in baseball.

Thompson led Grace Brethren to the Division VI title and set a state record for most career pitching victories with 56.

Earning first-team All-Division I recognition were outfielders Brian Horwitz of Crespi and Jason Kubel of Highland, and pitcher Matt Merricks of Oxnard.

In Division II, first-team choices included pitchers Chris Cordeiro of Thousand Oaks, Matt Harrington of Palmdale and Bill Susdorf of Hart, infielders Adam Leavitt of Thousand Oaks and Brian Lipman of Royal, and outfielder Mike Serrata of Hueneme.

Other first-team choices included:

Division III--Pitchers Tyler Adamczyk and Jesse Kozlowski of Westlake, outfielders Spencer Steward of Burroughs and Delwyn Young of Littlerock.

Division IV--Catcher Matt Cunningham of Notre Dame, pitcher Bobby Paschal of Chaminade, infielders Fernando Valenzuela of St. Francis and Alec Moss of Notre Dame.

Division V--Pitchers Michael Frost of Campbell Hall, Seth Epstein of Montclair Prep and Jeremy Gonzales of Village Christian, and outfielder Robbie Beaton of Providence.

Division VI--Julio Bautista and Fernando Velasquez of Faith Baptist, outfielder Artin Sedighan of Viewpoint and pitcher Josh Chambless of Granada Hills Hillcrest Christian.

SOFTBALL

* Pitcher Amy Rosson, who led Calabasas to a Southern Section championship, has been chosen Division IV player of the year.

Catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest of La Reina, who led the region with nine home runs and has signed with Arizona, was selected Division V player of the year. Vandergeest helped La Reina win the division.

Other first-team selections included:

Division I--Pitcher Kathryn Nevard of Camarillo and catcher Ashlie D’Errico of Highland.

Division II--Pitchers Nicole Angelo of Thousand Oaks and Meredith Cervenka of Crescenta Valley, infielders Sheridan Fowler of Thousand Oaks and Brittney Green of Simi Valley, and outfielder Kellie Cox of Quartz Hill.

Division III--Pitcher Erin Voeltz of Westlake and infielder Oli Keohohou of Newbury Park.

Division IV--Catcher Sara Hall of Calabasas, pitchers Anna Russell of Harvard-Westlake and Christina Lupacchini of Chaminade, and infielders Lindsey Weinstein of Chaminade, Kaitlin Reiss of Alemany and Christine Jordt of Louisville.

Division V--Pitcher Annie Marostica and outfielder Shannon Fink of St. Bonaventure, outfielder Tami Ortiz of Paraclete and utility player Kristen Ward of La Reina.

Division VI--Pitchers Juli Hartnell of Cornerstone Christian, Devina Quintero of Faith Baptist and Monique Lovell of Montclair Prep, infielder Tiffanie Monzo of Cornerstone Christian, catcher Ivette Hernandez of Faith Baptist and outfielder Brandy Hawkins of Montclair Prep.

TRACK AND FIELD

* State champions Chris Morgan and Schquay Brignac of Taft High and Shane Hackett of Verdugo Hills will compete in the Golden West Invitational at American River College in Sacramento today.

Morgan, a junior, will run in the boys’ 110-meter high hurdles after winning that event in the state championships at Cerritos College in Norwalk last Saturday.

Brignac, a junior, will compete in the girls’ high jump and Hackett, a senior, is in the boys’ pole vault.

Senior Josh Spiker of Ventura, state runner-up in the 3,200, will run in the boys’ mile.

Senior Fred Williams of Taft will run in the 200 after finishing third in that event in the state meet and senior Anton Porter of Highland will compete in the triple jump after a sixth-place state finish.

Senior Deneeka Torrey of Taft will run in the girls’ 100 high hurdles and 300 lows after finishing fifth and fourth, respectively, in those events in the state meet.

Senior Jessica Cosby of Cleveland is entered in the girls’ shotput after finishing second in state.

Junior Laura Jakosky of Agoura, the Southern Section Division II champion in the girls’ 3,200, is entered in that event.

VOLLEYBALL

* David Russell of Royal has been selected to the All-Southern Section Division I team.

Paul Jocas and Adam Hickerson of Chaminade and Josh Seffel of Village Christian made the Division III team.

Eric Dick of Chaminade was chosen Division III coach of the year.

MISCELLANY

* Bill Clark, assistant commissioner of athletics for the Southern Section since 1980, will retire effective Sept. 12.
