Bashin Living Up to CSUN Tradition

Scott Bashin of Van Nuys is the latest golfer from Cal State Northridge making a mark in the Los Angeles City Men’s Championship.

Bashin, an 18-year-old sophomore-to-be from Birmingham High, leads the 83rd annual Los Angeles City tournament by three strokes heading into the final two rounds on the Harding and Wilson courses in Griffith Park this weekend.

Five of the last six champions have played for Northridge, including defending champion Tim Hogarth.

The exception is Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, the 1998 champion, who is a graduate of USC.

The other Northridge winners were Michael Turner of Van Nuys in 1997, Hogarth of Northridge in 1996, Sang Hyun of Glendale in 1995 and Shane O’Brien of Valencia in 1994.

Turner, a left-hander, also won in 1987 and 1990.

Bashin shot 70-64--134 last weekend on the Balboa and Encino courses at Sepulveda Golf Complex in Encino.

Hogarth totaled 69-68--137 and is tied for second with Lew Murez of Sepulveda, who wound up at 68-69--137.

Steinberg finished at 69-69--138 and is tied for fourth with Greg Puga of Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena, who is at 68-70--138, and Bob Valerio of Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, who came in at 67-71--138.

Brian Woolf of Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge shot 71-68--139 and is tied for seventh with David Solomon of Long Beach, who is at 70-69--139.

Former champions include Al Geiberger in 1959, Curtis Sifford in 1965, Corey Pavin in 1977, Duffy Waldorf in 1983 and David Berganio in 1989.

Ina Kim of Encino claimed her first American Junior Golf Assn. full-field victory by five strokes in the Las Vegas Founders’ Junior on Thursday at Legacy Golf Club in Henderson, Nev.

“I was swinging more confidently and going for the pin when I knew I could get it there,” Kim said.

Kim, of Harvard-Westlake High, shot 70-69-68--207, nine-under par, to outdistance her sister, Hana Kim.

Hana Kim, a recent graduate of Brentwood High, finished at 73-75-64--212.

Hana’s 64 set a course record and tied the AJGA record of eight-under par in one round set by Leigh-Anne Hardin of Martinsville, Ind., the 1998 U.S. Junior Amateur champion.

Tim Wren of Oxnard, who plays for Cal State Northridge, and Keith Kinsel of Glendale shot four-over-par 71 at Industry Hills Golf Club on Thursday and qualified for the California Amateur Championship on July 17-22 at the Bayonet and Blackhorse golf courses in Seaside.

Adam Sides of Oxnard also shot 75 and is listed as an alternate.

The PGA of Southern California Golf Club in Beaumont, which will open on July 1, will take tee times beginning Saturday at 8 a.m.

The club, which includes a state-of-the-art teaching center, has two championship courses--the Champions and Legends--and is owned and operated by the Southern California Section of the PGA.

Sara Jones of Valencia finished second in the girls’ division of the Marisco Funds Junior Classic last week in Aspen, Colo.

Jones shot 81-71-78--230, finishing behind Alissa Kuczka of Phoenix, who wound up at 74-78-75--227.
