Borchard, committed to Portland, was 50-1 in round-robin dual matches, losing only to Sunny Hills’ Joseph Kao. He was 52-6 in sets overall, advanced to the semifinals of the Southern Section individual tournament before losing to eventual champion K.C. Corkery and went to the quarterfinals in the high school division of the Ojai tournament before falling to Sheng in three sets. Borchard won the Pacific View League singles title for the second consecutive season and notched his first-ever victory over Ojai tournament runner-up Paul Warkentin of San Marcos in a nonleague match.

Player School Year Andrew Rosenfeld Harvard-Westlake Senior

The Mission League singles runner-up, Rosenfeld was the No. 1 player on the No. 1 team in the region, leading the Wolverines to a 25-4-1 record and the championship match of the Southern Section Division I playoffs. Rosenfeld, who advanced to the round of 16 in the Southern Section singles tournament, was critical to the Wolverines’ rise to national prominence, playing key roles in the team’s runner-up finish in one national tournament and its third-place finish in another.

Yaftali, headed to UC Santa Barbara, went 38-4 in round-robin competition as the No. 1 player on the region’s only undefeated team. A four-year varsity player, Yaftali sparked Westlake to four consecutive appearances in Southern Section final matches. He and the Warriors (21-0) finally won the Division III championship this season. The Marmonte League singles runner-up to Sheng, Yaftali also went to the round of 16 in the Southern Section individual tournament.

FIRST-TEAM DOUBLES

Players, Year School Tim Mullane Junior/Amir Nejad, Senior Agoura

Mullane and Nejad played No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, during the regular season, but used athleticism, intelligence and chemistry to form aformidable combination for the Chargers down the stretch. They advanced to the high school doubles quarterfinals of the Ojai tournament, won the Marmonte League doubles title and were semifinalists in the Southern Section doubles tournament before losing to eventual champions Go Fukugaki and Tiege Sullivan of Peninsula.

They concentrated on doubles during the postseason, won the Mission League doubles title and earned a berth in the semifinals of the Southern Section tournament, where they lost to eventual runners-up Brian Swatt and Raymond Hekamat of Beverly Hills.

The Marmonte League doubles runners-up to Mullane and Nejad, Corso and Horak lost in the quarterfinals of the Southern Section tournament to Gortman and Haldeman. In round-robin matches, they were 34-2, with losses to two Beverly Hills teams in the Division III championship match.

Amritraj, ranked No. 9 in the boys’ 16 division in Southern California by the U.S. Tennis Assn., won the Mission League singles title and finished 50-1 in round-robin sets, with his only loss to Scott Stewart of Malibu. He led the Celts (18-5) to the semifinals of the Southern Section Division V playoffs.

Magsino was the top player for the City Section championship team. Ranked No. 23 in the boys’ 16 division in Southern California by the U.S. Tennis Assn., Magsino (12-3) advanced to the City Section individual singles championship match and won the title by default when Jason Nguyen of Chatsworth could not play because of a sprained ankle. Magsino lost only once to Nguyen and twice to Granada Hills’ Nima Roshan.

Weiss (55-3) was the only player in the region to win a set against Sheng in round-robin competition. No. 13-ranked in boys’ 18’s in Southern California, Weiss led the Coyotes to a 16-6 record and the semifinals of the Division IV playoffs.

SECOND-TEAM DOUBLES

Singles players during the regular season, they earned a berth in the Southern Section doubles quarterfinals. They helped Camarillo to a 15-6 record and the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs.

They were 33-0 in sets in round-robin play and advanced to the round of 16 of the Southern Section doubles tournament. They helped the Seraphs to a 12-5 record and the quarterfinals of the Division V playoffs.

Worthington was 54-3 in sets, including 37-2 in doubles with Nguyen. They were Pacific View League runners-up and helped Rio Mesa to an 18-3 record and the quarterfinals of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.
