Stern Is Upset in Sectional

Top-seeded Lori Stern of Ojai was upset by Lindsey Nelson of Orange, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in the girls’ 16 division round of 16 in the 98th Southern California junior sectional tennis championship Thursday at Los Cabelleros Racquet Club.

In the same draw, Monica Wiesener of Woodland Hills defeated Chelsy Thompson of Laguna Niguel, 7-6, 6-1.

In the boys’ 18 division, top-seeded Ryan Heinberg of Agoura defeated Cameron Ball of Newport Beach, 6-1, 7-6.

Quinn Borchard of Camarillo upset No. 4 Nick Weiss of Santa Monica, a former Calabasas High player, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. Amir Marandy of Woodland Hills upset No. 6 Tin Dong of Long Beach, 6-0, 6-3.

In girls’ 18, the three area players remaining in the round of 16 lost in straight sets, including No. 2 Bernadette Bayani of Simi Valley. Bayani lost the first set to Jessica Roland of Los Angeles, 6-4, and was down, 5-0, before retiring.

Three of six area players in the boys’ 16 division advanced.

No. 5-seeded Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated Derrick Bauer of Marina Del Rey, 6-5, 7-5. No. 6 Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas defeated Andrew Lieu of Thousand Oaks, 6-3, 6-2. Adrian Mardyks of Camarillo upset No. 7 Henry Mak of Irvine, 6-3, 0-6, 6-3.

In girls’ 12 division, No. 3 Jessica Nguyen of Chatsworth cruised past Michelle Murphy of Laguna Hills, 6-1, 6-2, and Kristen McVitty of Woodland Hills upset No. 7 Sarah Fansler of Laguna Niguel, 6-2, 6-0.

In boys’ 14 division, Gary Sacks of Calabasas defeated Bryan Newell of Temecula, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5. No. 6 Samuel Tadevosian of Glendale defeated Andrew Eklov of Manhattan Beach, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. In boys’ 10 division, Ryan Thacher of Studio City defeated Daniel Nguyen, 6-3, 6-2. In girls’ 10, Lauren Ritz of Thousand Oaks beat Roxanne Ellison of Coto de Caza, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
