Mychael Westervelt of Capistrano Valley High, the South Coast League champion in the triple jump and a two-time team most valuable athlete, has committed to compete at Vanguard University next season, Cougar girls’ track Coach Ken Sayles said.

Westervelt is the school record-holder in the triple jump and qualified to compete in the Southern Section Division I finals four times.

SURFING

Second-seeded Kirsten Raymond of San Juan Capistrano, fifth-seeded Kim Hamrock of Huntington Beach and seventh-seeded Brittany Quinn of Dana Point are among the top surfers who will compete in today’s third round of the Margaritaville Longboard Open at Malibu’s Surfrider State Beach.

Maureen Drummy of San Clemente, Bianca Valenti of Dana Point and Jayme Gee of San Clemente survived two heats Saturday and advanced to the third round, which begins at 7:30 a.m. today.

SOCCER

The Orange County Waves will play their first home game in three weeks today at 5 p.m. against the last-place Cincinnati Riverhawks of the A-League’s Central Division.

The Waves (7-7-1, 32 points), who are a point behind first-place El Paso and San Diego in the Pacific, are 4-5 at home and are 18th out of 24 teams in home attendance.

The Waves are led by former Corona del Mar High standout Jason Boyce, who is second in the league in scoring with 18 points (six goals, six assists).

SWIMMING

Danny Puchalski is one of four athletes who have signed letters of intent to swim at UC Irvine, Coach Charlie Schober announced.

Puchalski, from El Toro High, was South Coast League champion and third at the Southern Section Division I finals in the 100 breaststroke; he was ninth in the division in the 200 individual medley.

Others who have signed are Stephanie Moore from Sacramento Kennedy, Jayme Yahr from Escondido and Emily Mullen from Centerville (Ohio).

VOLLEYBALL

John Gaido has been hired as boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at Northwood, Athletic Director Rick Curtis said. Gaido was a varsity assistant at Irvine High since 1991 and with the Cal State Fullerton women’s team from 1983 to 1993.
