Eagle Wrestlers Are Hoping to Make Another Statement
Calvary Chapel will try to win its sixth state wrestling title when the high school finals begin today at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
Top-seeded Adam Benitez (135 pounds) and Andy Tufnell (160) lead the Eagles, who qualified eight wrestlers for the two-day competition.
Calvary Chapel, which won in 1993 and ’94 and 1996-98, will be attempting to tie Clovis for the most state titles.
Orlando Galvan, a junior who is top-seeded at 103 pounds, is the best hope for Loara, which has five wrestlers entered in the tournament. Villa Park has four.
Brethren Christian’s Michael Simpson, top-seeded at 125 pounds, will attempt to defend his state title.
Competition starts at 8 a.m today and ends with the quarterfinals. Consolation matches begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by the semifinals at 3 p.m. and the finals at 7.
